On Thursday, Jan. 12, we will be debuting our beer Randall.
If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a Randall it is a way to infuse natural flavors into a beer as it comes out of the tap and before it hits your glass. The tool was created by the great beer minds at Dogfish Head brewery.
On Thursday, we will be Randalling our stout with vanilla beans and coffee roasted by our neighbors at Jeremiah Joe to create a unique flavor profile.
But the Randall isn’t just for coffee.
It also can be used to infuse flavors from fruit peels, spices, and even whole cone hops into any beer. Some common flavor combinations used in a Randall are IPAs and pale ales with citrus peel, stouts with cinnamon, and even golden ales with peppers.
And don’t worry, we aren’t just going to stick to the basics. We’re going to get creative with this thing!
You can think of a beer Randall as something similar to a tea infuser, which is used to add natural flavors to tea. But instead of infusing tea, we are infusing beer as it comes out of the tap.
The beer tap is removed and a line is installed directly to the Randall, which has two chambers. At the other end of the Randall is a tap to pour the beer into the glass.
As the beer passes through the first chamber, which is filled with the special ingredients, it absorbs those flavors. In Thursday’s case, coffee from Jeremiah Joe and vanilla beans.
It then enters a second chamber to defoam as it is poured into your glass.
The roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate characteristics that are already present in our stout will combine well with the perceived sweetness of the vanilla beans. The coffee beans will also amp up the coffee flavor in the stout.
So stop by the Tap Room on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 4 p.m. to try this one out! The Randalled beer will be available exclusively in the Tap Room while it lasts!
Starting Sunday, Jan. 22, we will be doing a different Randalled beer every Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
We look forward to seeing you all there! And comment below if you have any suggestions for future beer Randall combinations.
