Can you believe it’s already been a year?
To celebrate out first year of successful operation, Tangled Roots has released our 1st Year Celebration Barleywine both on draft and in 22-ounce bottles, making this our first bottled beer!
If you’re unfamiliar with the style, the word barleywine might be a little confusing. But a barleywine is actually a style of beer. No grapes, or any other fruit for that matter, were used in the making of the beer.
The use of the word “wine” in the name derives from the higher alcohol content present in the style of beer, which approaches the alcohol content of traditional wines. Ours, for instance, clocks in at 9.6 percent abv.
Our 1st Year Celebration Barleywine commemorates the day Tangled Roots Brewing Company opened their doors in downtown Ottawa on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016.
Chief Commercial Officer Scott Struchen said the beer is meant to celebrate the brewery’s successful operation for a year in an area that had no brewpubs at the time.
“This was a white space for brewpubs when we opened,” he said. “There was nothing like this at the time and there were a lot of people who said this wouldn’t be possible. But we had faith in this local community and the region as a whole.”
The 1st Year Celebration Barleywine is a rich barleywine with flavors of caramel and toffee and a light toasted note. The aroma has hints of citrus from the hops.
Barleywines are typically drank in the winter months, when their higher alcohol content can provide a nice warming feeling. Those qualities make this beer the perfect beverage for a winter anniversary.
The beer is very balanced with sweetness at the beginning and a crisp bitterness to round out the finish.
The 1st Year Celebration Barleywine, which clocks in at 9.6 percent alcohol by volume, is being sold in single 22-ounce wax sealed bottles. It also will be available on draft for a very limited time. Stop by soon to get your hands on this special release!
